Tennoji Zoo: Tickets, the New Polar Bear House and Night ZOO

For years the zoo ran 09:30 to 17:00 on ordinary days but stretched to 18:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays in May and September, with last admission at 17:00. That is the schedule you will find on aggregator pages, in printed guides and in a good many blog posts.

It is no longer true. The zoo published on 3 August 2026 that from September 2026 every operating day runs 09:30 to 17:00 with last admission at 16:00 — Night ZOO evenings excepted. If you had planned a late-afternoon visit on a September weekend on the strength of the old hours, you would now arrive to a closed gate.

The second timing detail comes from the zoo's own hours page and matters more than the closing time: some animals go off view after 15:00. The zoo does not say which, and it publishes a separate list. In practice it means a 16:00 arrival buys you an hour in a zoo where part of the collection has already gone in.

Night ZOO: fourteen evenings, and what actually stays open

The zoo runs Night ZOO on fourteen dates a year and 2026's are published: 14, 15 and 16 August; 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 September, the last three being public holidays; and 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25 October. On those dates it opens at the usual 09:30 but stays open until 20:00, with last admission at 19:30.

The honest detail the zoo prints and nobody else repeats: the lighting starts at around 17:00, and not everything stays open to 20:00. The penguin park and sea lion wharf, the nocturnal house, the giraffe house in wet weather, the reptile house, the southern hemisphere house and POLAR BEAR COAST are viewable until 19:45. Other houses close at 18:00 or 18:30 depending on the month. The chimpanzees go in at 15:30 exactly as on a normal day.

So a Night ZOO ticket does not buy you the whole zoo after dark. It buys you a lit park, a handful of species that are genuinely more interesting in the evening, and the same ¥800 admission — the zoo charges no premium for these dates, which is unusual enough to be worth stating.

POLAR BEAR COAST is the reason to come this year. The zoo relocated and rebuilt its polar bear house and opened the new one on Tuesday 4 August 2026, with an opening ceremony that was balloted for places. It is the newest large enclosure in the zoo by some distance, and it is on the list of houses that stay viewable until 19:45 on Night ZOO evenings — which makes an evening visit the version to pick if the bears are your reason for coming.

The zoo organises the rest of the collection into four named areas it publishes on its own site: the African Savanna Zone, Elephant Village, Bird World and the Marine Animal Zone, alongside a nocturnal house and a reptile house called IFAR. There is no panda here — Japan's are elsewhere — and we would rather say so plainly than let the question sit.

What the zoo does not publish is a visit duration. Nobody in Osaka does, with one exception; our own routing is two hours to walk the circuit without stopping and three if you time it around the published feeding and snack times, which the zoo lists date by date on its events calendar.

The welfare question, answered honestly

Search for this zoo and you will find the argument before you find the opening hours, so it is worth setting out what is established and what is not.

In late April 2026 a short clip of a visibly thin tiger at the zoo circulated widely and drew heavy criticism, arriving weeks after Malaysian public concern about an elephant transferred to Japan. Malaysia's Department of Wildlife and National Parks, PERHILITAN, responded on 1–2 May 2026 to correct the central claim being made: the animal in the video is an Amur tiger, not a Malayan tiger, and no Malayan tigers are held at this zoo (Malay Mail and The Star, 1 and 2 May 2026).

What we could not find is a statement from the zoo itself about the animal's condition, and we are not going to invent one. What the zoo does publish is a stated mission built around animal welfare, a research and conservation programme, a published satisfaction survey with the changes it has made in response, and — a smaller detail that tells you something — a rule that assistance dogs need a phone call in advance because some animals react badly and parts of the route are then closed.

If zoos are a line you do not cross, this page is not going to move you, and it should not. If you are weighing it, those are the facts as they stand in Q3 2026.

The Shinsekai gate is the northern one. It is the gate for anyone coming from the kushikatsu streets, from Tsutenkaku or from Spa World, and it is the one to use if you are collecting the tower's cross-discount, because you will already be standing at the tower.

The Tenshiba gate is the southern one, opening onto the lawn in front of Tennoji station. It is the gate for anyone arriving from the Midosuji or Tanimachi lines, from JR Tennoji or from Kintetsu's Osaka-Abenobashi, and it is the one that puts you next to Abeno Harukas afterwards.

Every station on this list is five to ten minutes from its gate on foot, or ten to fifteen if you use the lifts — and the zoo publishes the lift-accessible route from each ticket barrier separately, which is more thought than most Osaka venues give the question.

Accessibility, prams and driving

• Wheelchairs are available at both gates but cannot be reserved — the zoo asks you to bring your own if you can
• Assistance dogs need a call to 06-6771-8401 beforehand: some animals react, and parts of the route are closed when a dog is inside
• Prams are fine; skateboards, scooters and anything else on wheels are not
• There is no car park at all, and stopping outside the zoo to set down passengers is illegal under the road traffic act. The nearest options are the Tennoji Park underground car park (490 spaces) and the Chausuyama entrance car park (70 spaces), neither run by the zoo
• Coach parking on the south side of Tennoji Park holds ten and cannot be booked
• The whole zoo is non-smoking, alcohol may not be brought in, and balls, balloons and bubbles are banned because they can end up in an enclosure
• Live streaming is not allowed; ordinary photography is, but never with flash, a strobe or a reflector pointed at an animal

Go if you are travelling with children. This is the cheapest half-day in central Osaka that occupies a six-year-old, it is ten minutes from three other things worth doing, and the children of Osaka City get in free — which tells you what the zoo is for.

Go if you are already spending the afternoon in Shinsekai. With the Tsutenkaku cross-discount the adult ticket is ¥720 and the child ticket ¥180, so a tower ticket you were buying anyway takes ¥80 off yours and ¥20 off theirs, and the online tower ticket keeps working until the end of the following month.

Go on a Night ZOO date if your dates allow it. Fourteen evenings a year, no premium on the ticket, and a lit park is a genuinely different visit.

Skip it if you have two days in Osaka and no children with you. Two hours here is two hours not spent at Osaka Castle or Kaiyukan, and neither of those has a substitute. And skip it on a Monday, when it is shut — the Museum of History, which closes on Tuesdays instead, is the swap.

The Tennoji–Shinsekai corner is the one part of Osaka where four separate things sit inside a ten-minute walk of each other, and the zoo is the one with the earliest hard stop. Build around that: book the Tsutenkaku time slot for late morning, do the tower first so the ticket in your pocket cuts the zoo price, walk in through the Shinsekai gate before 14:00 while everything is still on view, and come out by 17:00 into kushikatsu on Janjan Yokocho.

After that the district stays open when the zoo does not. Abeno Harukas runs to 22:00 from the Tenshiba side, and Spa World runs almost all night from the Shinsekai side.

If you are doing this with children and the day is hot, reverse it: the zoo at opening, when the animals are active and the concrete has not heated up, and the tower in the cool of the evening. The two-day route puts the whole cluster on one afternoon.
